September 2016: Time for Learning

Vol. 1 – Issue 5

Musings From the Mystic Path
The Month of September
Time for Learningred apple on books

This month honors the joys of returning to school and all the potential that is held in this space of opening to new teachings and friends. We continue the Lunar series with Part 2 and a closer look at the energy of the New Moon, and First Steps wraps up with Part 3 – “Where Do I go From Here?“.

We have some beautifully written poetry and, quotes from the writings of the Mystic Poet, Rumi, are woven between offerings as we reach out to the gifts of the many spiritual paths and teachings.

September flings the gates of experience open wide as we bask in the fruits of what was harvested in August and languish in the excitement of new journeys that lay ahead.

This one gets placed here.
And, that one goes over there.
Let’s move these two up here.
That will give the whole picture
A strong and clear focal point.

Oh, but wait, we must add these two.
They are perfectly shaped and are contrast in color.
And, the last one goes here to balance everything.

Now, if only humans could see the patterns
The way we Trees do when we shed our cones.

As Summer nears its end and the more relaxed pace increases with the start of school, return to regular work hours and more, its is easy to become distracted and frazzled by all that needs attention. All this comes rushing in with unexpected commitments and the need to focus your energy in a way that rivals the adept skills of the jugglers balancing multiple plates on the end of tall thin poles. I’ve fallen prey to this frenzy and I realize that I miss my adventures into the natural world and the creative flow of writing about what I’ve experienced there. I also realized that this is a sort of patterning that is my own and is one that plays out repeatedly as I ease into the comfortable dis-comfort of being stretched far too thin.

I carefully place this idea here and that project there and although the schematic is orderly and appears to be just what is needed to complete a complete and comely pattern, it can never remain that way. Other leaves fall around what has been placed, some completely obscuring the pattern originally intended. Strong winds come along or the downpour of rains that set adrift what has been carefully planned and placed as part of the perfectly set pattern. And, before you know it, time has moved forward and a new pattern has, out of necessity, replaced the old.

So with these thoughts in mind, I am re-patterning. Part of that plan is to make sure that I “make” time to engage in the natural world; to savor the pleasure I take in capturing those special moments on pen and in image. And, to allow myself to flow with these new patterns, giving more import to neither one nor the other, but seeing them as intimately connected to one another in the natural cycle of change. What patterns will you allow to take hold?

Life is a series of moments when past
Present and future are one.

I was a daughter and became a mother
But was still a daughter and I
Understood my mother’s love for me.

I am a mother and became a grandmother
But am still a mother and I understand
My mother’s love for her granddaughter.

My daughter has become a mother and
She now understands the love I feel for her.

Three kinds of woman’s love….
Similar yet different
At the same time.

Love that binds this generation of
Women to the ones who came before
And to the ones not yet born.

A unique woman’s love
A cord of connection from
Mother to mother’s mother and
From daughter to daughter’s daughter.

Generation after generation
A woman gives birth reaching
For her minutes old daughter as
Her own mother watches and remembers
When it was she who eagerly reached for
Her minutes old daughter while
Her mother watched.

Past love…Present love…Future love
As an endless cycle.

“Stop acting so small. You are the universe in ecstatic motion.”

One Moment of Power
by Celestine

The power of the God races through me
Energizing and empowering me to action.

Each task I begin becomes imbued with
A charge of electricity and excitement.

My energy knows no limits!
I am blazing with the power of the noon day sun!

Until I am not…..

The burning light within me sputters and
Quickly cools like the air at dusk.

My inner sun is sinking below the horizon
And I feel drained and exhausted.

I am caressed by the Goddess and I find
Comfort and respite in her arms.

She admonishes me to rest and I am at peace.

by P.W.

Pain, my companion.
What lesson do you have for me today?

What message can I hear and
Internalize so as not to have to
Repeat and repeat and repeat…

What pattern can I break
To reach into the chrysalis and allow the
Monarch to breathe free and allow her wings to fly?

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world.
Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”

Focus On…

The Autumnal Equinox

by M.Q.

Autumn Is Upon Us!
Cool, Colorful, Rich, Serendipitous Autumn!

And this season’s equinox will shortly follow. An equinox occurs when the Earth’s tilt and orbit around the sun combine in such a way that her two hemisphere’s receive the sun’s rays equally. Day and night will be approximately the same in length. This is the sabbat that is often called Mabon. A time of cosmic balance, individual and collective assessment, harvest blessings and gratitude. This can be easy to forget in today’s world.

I recently went to my girlfriend’s house for a visit. She invited her neighbor and the evening was wonderful (I didn’t get home until 3am!!). There was plenty of food, wine, & lively conversation. We talked and shared viewpoints about children and education; art and music; politics, religion and metaphysics. Well into the evening and past nouvelle pleasantries, the neighbor said, “I love your optimism”, while shaking her head. “You have such hope & confidence. How? How do you remain calm with the state of things? With the U.S. election, with wars, racism, hunger, refugees, disasters, terror attacks. How can you be positive?” “I work to stay balanced,” I replied. “I do healthy things that I love. I surround myself with uplifting friends and associates.”

Yes, there is negativity, despair, and injustice; there is so much! Why add to those feeling and emotions? Most of us would benefit from less stress and a peaceful state of being.

Mabon and the Autumnal Equinox is a perfect reminder of the need to balance. The bright, beautiful Sun will enter Libra (hint, hint) on Sept. 22, 2016. If we look at the numerology of that date; 9,2,2,2,1,6 = 2,2 we get 4. An equal number of order; used in the bases of pyramids, structures and homes. A strong number of solidity, to built upon. The bountiful fall season, can be the perfect harbinger for bringing about a more appreciative state of well-being.

I reminded my friends of their health, their gorgeous children, their beautiful, safe homes. Their accessibility to healthcare, food, and water. Freedom. Their very lives. My friend’s neighbor has 7 children. Seven! Talk about abundance! Both her and her husband are hard working and fiercely passionate. They are raising the next generation; instilling hard work ethics, principles of equality, altruistic values, & compassion. I said, “You are the epitome of strength, hope, and optimism!”

I implore you this season to start with your own base foundation, acknowledge your blessings, show your gratitude. Assess where you are and mirror Mother Nature’s approaching changes towards radiance. I believe the saying is…

” Think Globally, Act Locally.”

One can start small, a walk around the block for fresh air and a view of fall’s rich, color changing hues. Make a donation, any amount, to a food or blood bank, shelter or charity of your choice. Or maybe just an evening laughing and bonding with close friends will bring you a bit of joy. What could be better as we head into colder, darker months than remembering our inner, bright warm sparks of divinity and spreading that abundance of harmonious light.

A Three Part Lunar Series..

New Moons in September
by Iolanthe

You may have heard a phase of the moon referred to as New Moon, or Dark Moon. Are these referring to the same thing? Not really. First, the Dark Moon refers to the time when we cannot see the moon because it is between the Sun and the Earth; solar illumination is reflected on the side of the moon we cannot see. We see the dark side; hence, the Dark Moon. The length of this phase is variable and it lasts between 1 and 3 days.

The New Moon occurs during the midpoint of the Dark Moon phase; it is exactly at the moment between waning and waxing. It is a time of becoming. Typically, the time for the New Moon is given as the midpoint time during the Dark Moon phase.

September 2016 will have 2 New Moons. The first New Moon in September will occur at 5:03 am Thursday September 1, 2016. The second New Moon in September will occur at 8:13 pm Friday September 30.

This second New Moon in one month is known as a Black Moon. There are some who say that magick worked during the Black Moon are especially powerful.

The first New Moon will be in Virgo, a mutable Earth sign, and will occur on the first day of the month, a time for new beginnings. Mutable refers to the sense of change, shifting, adaptability, flexibility. Virgo, as an Earth sign, is one that encourages growth, manifestation, creating, anchoring in the material world.

Combining these influences, the time of the first New Moon would be a good time to do magick to help bring about the change you want to see in yourself and in the world around you; to bring healing after big upheavals; to strive for flexibility in how you fit into your circumstances. This brings to my mind the Serenity Prayer from Reinhold Niebuhr:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

The second New Moon, the Black Moon, will be in Libra, a cardinal air sign, and will occur on the last day of the month, a time of ending what had been started at the first New Moon.

Cardinal refers to the sense of initiation, starting something new, being the first to try something. Libra, as an Air sign, reflects new ideas, new ways of looking at the old familiar thoughts with new insights; writing, speaking, thinking in ways different than what you had been used to. The Black Moon time is a powerful time for magicks. Combining the forces of ending what had been started, the sense of initiating something new, and new ways of thinking at this time of the Dark Moon, we can choose to do magicks that invoke new patterns of thoughts, of habits, starting new projects, asking for help with beginning something that you are not yet sure of the outcome, letting go of what you had thought before and that no longer seems to be what you need.

If you are interested in working magick for starting new ventures, new plans, bringing forth what you want to manifest in your life, perform your workings on the day before, the day of, and the day after the New Moon. Let the burgeoning New Moon energy help enhance your workings.

The Moon will always be with us, influencing the oceans’ waves, our own moods, inspiring poetry, illuminating the night skies, and enhancing our sense of wonder. And, there are those who use moon phases to help with gardening and when to plant seeds and when to harvest the crops.

First Steps on the Seeker’s Path

In Search of the Divine – Part Three
Where Do I Go From Here?
by Robin

” ….we forget that the road less travelled is the one that moves into the space of knowing who and what we are.”

Take a step on the Path
Where do I go from Here?

The road less travelled…
Of course!

Last month, I invited you on a journey back to yourself and the challenge of taking a path that was not the routine. All wound back to the same revelation! The seeking of the Divine is no further away than your own reflection. So, where do you go having arrived at that space of understanding? Is it really that uncomplicated and easy? Is it truly that anti-climatic?

The answer to those questions unfolds in your ability to remain open to the possibilities and to hold a pattern of gratitude for each new bit of information that you uncover. Looking out with the enthusiasm of a child who knows no limitation and believes that he/she can be or do anything. Remember those years? When playing pretend was as real to you as sitting at your work station or driving home from a long work day has become in your current reality. We become dull to the wonder that surrounds us as we settle more deeply, year after year, into our routine. And, in that settling we often miss those precious opportunities to embrace a new way of interacting with the Divine.

Where do we go from here? We start at the beginning again. Everything is cyclical in nature. We know this to be true, yet cling to a flat line of linear time. Rewind and go back to those first moments when you felt the presence of something “more” than yourself. That first experience of seeing the beauty and innate spark of life somewhere that you least expected. Go back to the amazement you felt when seeing the first tiny bud of a spring flower peering up at you through the crack in a city cement winter walkway. Go back to that first time you looked up at the night sky and really saw the glow of Mother Moon’s full eye staring back at you, her child of great potential. Or, the warmth of Father Sun that spread through you as you went outside at lunch having been in your air conditioned office. He reminded you of the great strength and power held in standing fully in the Light of unintended grace. Breathe into the first time you simply allowed yourself to “be”; content and whole in the stillness of surrender to no expectation!

Taking the time and holding the daily intention to notice something new everyday that is a reflection of the Divine brings you closer to what you seek. And, you will not be disappointed as there is much in this wonder-filled world that calls to us to be present in the experience of your own Divine nature. Look out and see the vastness of a sea that contains mysteries yet to be discovered that hold the key to our Divine birthright….

Where do I go from here?

How do I find my way
Back to the Source
Of what my seeking

I take one step at a time..

One increment of space
Held in the notion of time.

Where do I go from here?
How will I know that
I have arrived?

I awaken each day
Calling forth the
Pulse of life to
Create a symphony
Of Cosmic harmony.

Where do I go from here?

I stand at the end of the
Wooden path filled with
Questions that may only
Be answered in diving into
The vastness of my own
Divine sea…
